Ground Level "Hako-Nori" Shirt
The shirt features a small logo on the chest, borrowing in design from the title card of an old Nippon TV program called The Weekender (ウィークエンダー). Running from 1975-1984, the late nite show focused primarily on b-class crime stories from underworlds that were forbidden to be discussed on Japanese national news. It was a cult favorite of the era, celebrated by many as a finger in the eye of Japanese conservatism. Every episode concluded with the remark, “maybe next week will be a good week... good night."
.
The back of the shirt features a still image of a gang of bosozoku youth partaking in the act of “box riding” (ハコ乗り). Among other acts of reckless abandon, bosozoku youths would “box ride” as a display of exuberance in flagrant dismissal of traffic codes & conventional order on the streets of Japan. Think punk rock ethos meets Japanese car culture but not really - more so entirely its own thing and inherently pure in that!
.
